Happy Together
Let me just start by saying I was really iffy about this movie because it is a very "in your face" emotions kind of movie. Wong Kar Wai, from what I have noticed is that he leaves no room for questioning the emotions he is trying to portray. If a character is angry or frustrated, the camera is shaky, the colors will become so bright, it seems like they're vibrating, the sounds are in chaos, and everything suddenly become almost "too much". Happy Together is a movie about a couple who become stranded in Argentina, but one thing leads to another, and their relationship falls to ruins. Both men go through numerous breakups and makeups, and ultimately in the end stay apart. The main character we follow is Lai, an introverted hard worker. He meets a coworker, Cheng, and starts seeing the useless and toxic nature of his and his current boyfriends relationship and moves on from Argentina back home to Hong Kong. Cheng unfortunately has his own journey/goals to achieve and him and Lai do not get together. In my film notes, I mention that Happy Together is a very immersive movie. All the colors, camera movements, angles, everything comes together to complete the perspective of the character.
I am starting to see a reappearing theme in his movies, he really does not like these couples to win. But to be honest, I do appreciate it. Wong Kar Wai incorporates a lot of real concepts that accurately reflect the real world. The message I see is that nothing is perfect, and I think it's a nice refresher. Happy Together is an overall amazing movie I feel, cinematically shot beautifully and the storyline is amazing. I rate this movie a 9/10.
I gave you Wong Kar-Wai in the wrong order!
