Midnight in Paris
Midnight in Paris, directed by Woody Allen, is about an aspiring writer, Gil Pender. Gil is obsessed with 1920s Paris and spends the majority of the movie wishing and reminiscing the hope that he was born in the time period. The movie itself brings forth the message that no matter what time period you're in, nobody is truly happy with the place they're in, and always yearn for the past. Gil's struggles with his writing, engagement, and place of being is really human in a way- where all he wants is to enjoy himself.
Pender as a character was really interesting to watch, he was a very naive person, and often followed others blindly. I really disliked his fiancé, which was probably the whole point, but I really did not like how her and her parents spoke about him when he was really just trying to follow his dreams.
Overall I rate this movie a 7.5/10, I liked the message behind it, but there was nothing really notable to me that stood out.
I have mixed feelings about this movie. As an English teacher, I should be losing my mind over it. But it's not even Woody Allen's best movie...
